Frequently asked questions.
What are the benefits of having a postpartum doula?
Many times after baby’s arrival, family members are immediately surrounding the new parents with extra help and support within the first couple of weeks. The postpartum period is much longer than that. Around weeks 3-4 there may be a shift in baby’s sleep or feeding habits, parents are still adjusting to changes of having a new baby, and/or paternity leave has already ended. Some moms find that they may begin to struggle with postpartum mood disorder, anxiety, or depression. A postpartum doula is there to help navigate this time by helping to take some of the load and stressors off of mom. It’s like having a bestie that “gets it” by helping you prioritize self-care, getting extra rest, drinking enough water, eating meals that are nutrient rich, and helping moms have a sense of “I CAN do this” during this period. They can also bring along resources and extra things to take care of mama!
Is there anything you cannot do?
Since I am a non-medically trained professional, I cannot do anything within the scope of medical practice, such as giving baby medicine, checking temperature, giving medical advice, or diagnosing anything. Also outside of my scope is driving clients, babysitting siblings, pet care, providing heavy housecleaning, or staying alone with the baby for extended periods of time.
When should I hire a postpartum doula?
Just know that I do not require a specific time for you to hire me, and you can absolutely engage my services after your baby is born! However, the closer you are to your due date or if you have already had your baby, my availability may become limited. To ensure greater flexibility with scheduling—especially in case I am serving other families as well—I recommend that you hire me around week 30 to book several visits that you may already anticipate wanting! When your baby decides it is time to arrive, we can revisit any details as needed and get our first initial visit on the calendar, too!
